I have posted this as a reply to "Best Way to Promote people" But then I thought this should be told to youngsters to help them understand the trick of being getting promoted..

I have learnt this.. long ago  but did not ./ could not apply due to my nature.. which I am quite aware of..

The only trick to get promoted is what?

hard work?

Good work?

Intelligence?

Oiling?/ Buttering?

Nahhh.. none of these are not the right answer.

The right answer in one sentence is

PLS SEE THAT YOU DO NOT GET NEGATIVE MARKS at office.

.. Baassss!! Read on to understand this.. This is no joke nor any attack against the system but plain practical advice for you all.

Getting positive marks is not mandatory ..say  by working hard or oiling boss or going the extra mile to innovate.. if you do all these okay/ fine  do them.. but these are not essential..

The essential or mandatory reqmt is NOT TO GET NEGATIVE MARKS..

Negative marks means? Anything that damages you.. Once you are damaged you lose speed, your growth falters, your run to the top falters.. somebody else crosses you...and it also maks you vulnerable.. because people are people.. they will think you are prone to earn negative marks and will be afraid of you..

What earns negative marks for you?

It depends on the boss what can be negative for you under him.

If coming late to office is negative  for boss..come one hour earlier.

If going home on time is negative for boss stay back at office till 730 (that is the usual time to stay back till since it gives you some money!!!!)

Of course fighting with boss, pointing out mistakes of boss or organisation and SUCH OBVIOUS things are negative we all know..

I am talking of the subtle ACTS or INACTIONS that EARN YOU NEGATIVE  MARKS..

If not working hard is negative for boss then work hard.

Are you getting me?

Go about your growth attempts in the backward way.. back calculation sort of..

Some bosses may not demand hard work from you.. for them wishing their wives may be the "IN -THING".. and if you do not wish her it may be negative for you.. so do pls wish morning and night. and every day even when you are away on leave!!

I did not wish my boss''s wife once.. in Siliguri Do.. and I was in B grade..

Mark this.. I had been wishing her every day.. and I was very close to this boss ... he never understood work..he once told me Shantanu pls make Gollas  and not this squares (means pls make me pie chart and not bar charts when I was using Harvard Print Graphics to make a review presentation for the DO-- TS people used to make these those days because TS people were the best those days)  so I need not have worked either. under him. though I did work.. and hard also.. I rbr that year I kept awake whole night to complete the DOs damn Folder.. and why? because the Retail chaps did not complete their work till the last night.. so though I had completed mine long ago.. just because of them since I was making the folder..i kept awake whole night.. came home at 8 am washed had bfast and then went back at 945 for the review!!

But one day  in that year damaged it all

He asked me why did you not wish my wife today?

And as my nature was by then which is now known to all (is it my fault I wonder all the time, though!!) .. I retorted.. "I am not reporting to your wife".. and stopped wishing her after that.. and LO and Behold He gave me a Satisfactory that year and filled up my APA with words like "Shantanu has lost interest in work.. blah blah" - the same year when i kept awake making the damn folder for the whole DO.. I am not repeating the words.. don''t ask me how I know.. I know I saw..!! [I know many things that have happened to me. & sometimes I wonder what will happen if I GO TO court.. but then I am a peace loving man and with just 7 years in my life left.. now I am really tired!! just want to sleep....]

So you see the trick is NOT TO EARN NEGATIVE MARKS.. and then REST ASSURED my friends sooner or later you will become ED or at least GM  quite comfortably and long before retirement..

Those you see around you not getting promoted or getting stuck at some grade even at DGM or GM .. remember this .., they have earned some negative mark finally somewhere and have got stuck.!!

In other words one can say, that one should know, how to please yor boss. Just concentrate on what can REALLY PLEASE YOR BOSS. follow that religiously, see it works and will do wonders. Several examples are as follows:

1. If yor boss is living alone, offer him for regular lunch and dinner at yor home(it can annoy yor wife, but will please yor boss definitely).

2. Take fruits or sweets at his home regularly. Such gift loving bosses will keep telling u to do the same for their bosses. This is clear indication of his likings and dislikings.

3. If you are in sales, tell yor dealers/distributors to arranfe lavish parties for yor boss on regular basis.

4. Always pester him to bring his wife to the place of posting, so that she can also enjoy the same luxuries.

5. Arrange regular darshan of Temples , so that such corrupt bosses can ward off the bad omens.

6. If yor boss tells u to give proposals involving huge capital investments(though may be purely wastage of corporation''s money), pl be first in yor office to make proposals. You will see that yor proposal is put as sample proposal for yor colleagues. Forget about the corporation''s loss. Ye koi mere ghar ki company nahi hai. If you start thinking from corporation''s point of view, the corporation will definitely achieve its goal, but rest assured, you will loose yours.

7. once a senior officer told me that in IOC only those are successful, who know , how to fulfill wishes of their bosses.

8. If yor boss looks for monetary gratifications, you need to arrange for that also.

9. Make sure, that you timely arrange the air/railway tickets for his regular journeys to his place, where his family is based. Surely, it will either burn a hole in yor pocket or you will have to beg before somebody, who is more eager than u to please yor boss.

BUT REMEMBER! IT WILL ALL BE AT THE COST OF YOR SELF ESTEEM.

I think everybody is being idealistic in this topic''s reply. My dear friends it ''ll not harm ur self esteem, if u do it smartly. What shantanu sir told is just an example.Don''t take as it is, but........

learn frm it if u can, and do smart work.

Afterall success comes to those "who do smart work rather hard work"

these are not idealistic things. these are the harsh realities based upon expereinces. some get it early, some get it very late.

People who are behind bars, by bad/irresponsible judgement, are not necessarily guilty and the Judges who delivered injustice to innocent people by intentionally or ignorance are not deserved to hold the post

What I said is just what i said

Do not earn negative marks. That is all.

Now each one of you may learn from this statement of mine differently. What you take away from my sentence is upto you.

Yes at sometimes in order not to earn Negative Marks you may have to lose self esteem, but then what is self esteem? This itself is a big subject. But in one word self esteem is a manifestation of what you think of yourself.. Some link to your ego. Do not go literally by my example. Wishing someone''s wife and that too older than me DOES NOT MAKE ME LOSE MY SELF ESTEEM. Pls have no doubt of this. Self Esteem was never my problem because nobody in IndianOil can take away my self esteem. Why? Because I am what I am. I know my worth. SO what if others do not know! And I have gained much from my other experiences.. like just now I came back from attending a function at a college where I was the Chief Guest. I got my respects from people I like and where I am recognised. IOCL cannot take or add to my self esteem. It is ONLY A HOLLOW man who depends on IOCL for self esteem.

What went wrong with me is that I lost my temper and retorted. That is where I lost and got negative marks in my life. My dear  I have lost much because of my habit of pointing out mistakes of others. So i kept getting negative marks.

Some will say this man has realised after so long. Naahhhh i know my faults for long enough.. That is why I never feel sad when I do not get promoted and that is why I am comfortable working under my batchmates even.. and not feel anything at all. That is because it is the path I have chosen because of my character.

So to sum up my advice is again the same.

Do not earn negative marks if you want to grow.

If you have self esteem problems, or other problems and cannot avoid earning negative marks then fine accept it and grow inside and elsewhere. Look at IOCL as a learning pad and earning pad. Enjoy within yourself and be happy.

One way of avoiding negative marks is you should be a good servant and need not be a inteligent servant. Good servants are recognised first well. Inteligent servants are either not awarded or avoided easily.

Coming to the negative marks, well they are so amusing. If you drink you can understand the ecstasy of somethings which others don''t. Similar is the case with those negative marks that you told about. You should give some advice to those who take pleasure in scoring those negative marks... and laugh when they are ****** by bosses or management.

I HAVE LEARNT SO MANY THINGS AND COME TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT MINDS AND WAYS TO FOLLOW. ONE THING MAY CLICK TO ONE AND MAY NOT TO THE OTHERS.

ONE CAN NOT APPLY THE SAME IDEA AS THE OTHERS ARE DOING BECAUSE IT MAY NOT SUITS TO ONEs CHARACTER AND CAN DAMAGE THE THINGS RATHER THAN PLEASANT ONE.

ONE CAN MAKE HIS BOSS HAPPY BUT IT MAY GIVE THE HURTING FEELING FOR THE OTHER ONE.

ONE CAN COMPROMISE WITH SELF RESPECT AND OTHER CAN NOT. THERE WAS A TIME WHEN I STOP SAYING GOOD MORNING TO MY BOSS AS I WAS NOT GETTING THE APPROPRIATE REPLY FROM HIM AND LATER ON I COULD ABLE TO MAKE HIM REALISED AND REST OF THE PERIOD WE HAD GOOD RELATIONS.
