Dear Colleagues,
The Jaipur fire may have died out but this unfortunate incident will be a constant reminder of importance of safety in our business. We lost six of our colleagues and suffered a massive setback. It was extremely disheartening. I deeply mourn the death of our colleagues and offer my sincere condolences to the bereaved families. It is important that we reflect upon the Jaipur tragedy, with a very firm reminder to commit to duty wholeheartedly. Leave no loopholes. Attention, precaution, preparedness must be our field mantra. In the wake of the unfortunate incident, we have voluntarily taken up the exercise of instituting safety audit at all our locations. However, I want to stress upon the urgent need to change our operational practices. We definitely should adopt the mindset of owning up our actions and responsibilities.
More importantly, we need to think as an organisation rather than as an individual. We must have cross-divisional exchange of information, experiences, and more importantly, activity-detailing while performing common functions. Today, we possess an attitude which bars us from giving cognizance to the presence of our colleagues from other divisions while discharging the duty. There is a dire need to do some re-thinking and begin to work as an organisation.
In line with our new vision to be ‘The Energy of India’, this month we moved a step further and signed an MOU with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) to jointly promote the activities of nuclear power business. We are aiming at investing in our maiden nuclear power generation venture in partnership with NPCIL. Besides securing the availability of power, the nuclear power will reap the benefits of secured returns on investments. A core group comprising officials of both NPCIL and IndianOil has been set up to make a detailed study and assess the investment option for participation, including details about the site. Nuclear energy, as you know, is an important source to bridge the energy deficit and an organic route of growth across the energy value chain.
Recently, I had the opportunity of visiting our refineries at Panipat, Guwahati and Digboi. Undoubtedly, I reiterated the need for following safety measures in all the activities. Doing the right thing in the right way, even when no one is watching is ethical working. Honesty, integrity and accountability must be on top of our minds, while we execute our duty.
The Naphtha Cracker project at Panipat is gearing up for commissioning. However, on our project implementation, I feel though we have come up to the stage of 95% progress very well, our ability to handle finishing 2-3% needs to be spruced up in order to achieve results. As this is the most difficult phase, it is here that we give up and delays set in. I would urge you all to take extra initiatives to achieve on-time results. On the new marketing challenges, I feel the solid fuel handling and the marketing need must be aligned. The appointment of channel partners, contracts of services and materials is getting in place. We should be ready for polymer marketing early next year.
The performance of AOD and North East Integrated State Office is worth appreciating. The Integration of the marketing functions of AOD and IndianOil in the North East has been very beneficial to the organisation. The inauguration of a fully automated retail outlet enabled the integrated marketing set-up in the North-East to roll out its master plan for upgradation of the retail outlets as well as other marketing infrastructure in the entire North-East. At Guwahati and Digboi, I was delighted to see the initiatives on TPM and process modifications and stream-sharing taken up for improvement in distillate yield and reduction of energy consumption.
The operating compulsions of our business might tempt us to by-pass issues of Safety and resort to other short-cuts but the principles that govern our actions must guide us to the right course. As I have been writing in my earlier communications, I believe it is very important for each employee of the Corporation to understand each element of the new Vision which has been adopted by IndianOil. The element of ‘ETHICS’ clearly stands for the moral principles, as of an individual and with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions. It is only when our ethics govern our actions that we do justice to ourselves and to our duty. Our business is viewed as the lifeline of the country, our responsibilities lie much above a 9-to-5 presence on the field; therefore, we envision that each one of us should make “ETHICS” – an inherent part of our work attitude.
